Man City ease to a win over Liverpool
Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw shined as Man City came from a goal down to thrash Liverpool 5-1 at the Joie Stadium. On a wet and windy day in Manchester it was Liverpool that struck first as captain Taylor Hinds managed to chip Man City's 19-year-old goalkeeper Khiara Keating from outside the box.
City were quick to fire back as a cross into the box by Esme Morgan was turned into the goal by Liverpool defender Gemma Bonner. The game that transcended into the Khadija Shaw show as she capitalised on a bad pass by the Liverpool defence and calmly slotted home. In extra time she got her second, this time with a towering header which the keeper couldn't keep out even though she got a hand to it.
Man City were in complete control for most of the second half and when Shaw completed her hat-trick in the 56th minute after goof work from Lauren Hemp, the contest was over.
Lauren Hemp was forced off through injury after a nasty looking collision with Liverpool goalkeeper Teagan Micah when she came racing out of her goal and cleared Hemp out. Although the challenge looked outside of the box, a penalty was awarded along with a yellow card for Micah and Chloe Kelly stepped up to score what would prove to be the final goal of the game.
Speaking after the game, City manager Gareth Taylor spoke about his sides resiliency and ability to play in what were difficult conditions, "Really good from the girls, difficult conditions, everyone could see that, that half was difficult to play out from... but we capitalised on that in the first half and created good chances before their first goal, which was the only really half chance they had".
Khadija Shaw will steal the headlines from this game and rightly so as she has scored three hat-trick in her last four Womens Super League games. Taylor was very keen to praise his forward for being patient for her opportunities and the hard work she has been putting in, "Her transitioning into the club, she had to compete with Ellen White for the number nine shirt, but this season and last season she has taken it upon herself, she has a proven record for her country and when she played in France she outscored all of them".
Liverpool manager Matt Beard was clearly dejected when speaking after the game and felt as though his team made many uncharacteristic mistakes that led to the game getting away from them. He also acknowledged the gap between his side and the teams at the top of the league when he said, "It's a bit of an eye-opener for us, on the gap between the Man City's, the Chelsea's and the Arsenal's, but I think we've bridged the gap on Man United and the other teams".
